Foods most likely to cause sickness

Food poisoning is a serious illness, something which can happen to anyone at any time. With this in mind, Quorn has created a breakdown of which foods are more risky, to help lower your chances of sickness when cooking for your family or friends

Risky Foods

You shouldn’t totally avoid these foods as they are an important part of a healthy diet, but there are foods which can lead to a higher risk of sickness if not prepared properly.

  • Leafy Greens – That’s right, you’re not always safe with salad. Make sure you wash all of your veg thoroughly to remove all soil and bacteria picked up during the growing process. Separate chopping boards should also be used to prevent contamination and sickness. Tomatoes, berries and sprouts can be contaminated as a result of growing conditions, so be sure to give them a good wash and clean your hands with hot, soapy water, both before and after preparation.

  • Eggs – Salmonella and bacteria mean that this breakfast favorite makes the list. Make sure you cook thoroughly to kill all germs, and be careful with products which contain raw eggs such as cookie dough and ice cream.

  • Tuna – This fish can be contaminated by scombrotoxin, which can lead to flushes, headaches, and cramps. It needs to be stored below 60 degrees once it’s been caught, which surprisingly isn’t always the case.

  • Oysters – Although a delicacy, Oysters need to be cooked thoroughly. This is because, before they were caught, they were lurking around on the ocean floor filtering water in order to feed. They can contain germs like norovirus and bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus so must be cooked completely.

  • Cheese – The most common occurrence of sickness from cheese is in the home. Soft cheeses in particular can be contaminated with bacteria. To avoid sickness, store in the fridge and use by the specified dates. If in doubt, throw it out!

  • Raw Meat – If this isn’t stored carefully, you could suffer from Campylobacter or E.coli. To avoid this, make sure that during preparation everything is washed thoroughly, and the meat is cooked at a minimum temperature of 165°F until fully cooked.

Overall, the majority of food sickness is preventable, yet it can cause an estimated 48 million illnesses and 3,000 deaths each year in the US. Awareness of some of the main causes of sickness from different food groups can be key to avoidance.
