Is Quorn suitable for my child?
The first solids that you give your child should be simple, easily digestible foods such as mashed or pureed vegetables, fruit or rice. From 9 months old it’s important to offer a range of foods in a balanced and varied diet. Schoolfoodplan.com states that a child’s healthy balanced diet should consist of:
1. Plenty of fruit and vegetables
2. Plenty of unrefined starchy foods
3. Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein
4. Some milk and dairy foods
Quorn products contain plenty of nutrients, including protein and fiber so they’re safe to introduce to your child’s diet from 9 months.
Is it okay to introduce Quorn to my child’s diet?
Exploring different textures and flavours is important in a child’s diet and can help shape their attitude towards food as they grow. By introducing healthier, low fat foods that are a source of protein and fibre at a young age, the body becomes more accustomed to these nutrients as it develops, rather than craving sugary, salty or fatty foods.
Low sodium levels are vital in a child’s diet, as too much sodium can cause kidney problems. Children under 12 months should have less than one gram of sodium per day. The main ingredient of Quorn, Mycoprotein™, is low in sodium containing 0.005g per 100g.
As a result, lots of Quorn products have a low sodium content, for example, the salt content of Quorn Mince is 0.5g for 100g and for Quorn pieces it is 0.75g salt per 100g. It is always advisable to check the packaging of Quorn products to see the sodium content.
Can I be intolerant to Quorn?
Quorn™ products have been eaten for more than 30 years with nearly 3 billion Quorn meals now served. It’s important to know that Quorn foods can contain allergens, such as egg, milk and gluten. These are clearly marked on the back of pack within the ingredient declaration and the allergy advice section.
There have been rare cases of allergic reactions to products which contain Mycoprotein™, a member of the fungi / mould family (fusarium venenatum). Mycoprotein is high in protein and fibre which may cause intolerance in some people.
The foods standards agency states that “research estimates that between one in 100,000 to 200,000 people will react to (Quorn ™ products)… All protein foods have the potential to cause an adverse reaction in some consumers. About one in 200 people are thought to be intolerant to soya for example.”
