Quorn Foods and Meat Pros and Cons

Quorn products are popular all around the globe as a tasty alternative to meat. Products such as Meatless and Soy Free Quorn Grounds are nutritious as they are a source of fiber and protein.

 Is Quorn safe?

Quorn products are a range of safe meat alternatives. Their main ingredient is Mycoprotein™ which is frozen during production and therefore is not impacted by Campylobacter. As the Quorn product range is Meatless and Soy Free*, it doesn’t have the various forms of harmful bacteria, often found in meat, fish and dairy products. Quorn™ products have been eaten for more than 30 years with nearly 3 billion Quorn meals now served.

However, it’s important to know that Quorn foods can contain allergens, such as egg, milk and gluten. These are clearly marked on the back of pack within the ingredient declaration and the allergy advice section.

There have been rare cases of allergic reactions to products which contain Mycoprotein, a member of the fungi / mold family (fusarium venenatum). Mycoprotein is high in protein and fibre which may cause intolerance in some people.

The foods standards agency states that “research estimates that between 1 in 100,000 to 200,000 people will react to it” (Quorn™ products).

All protein foods have the potential to cause an adverse reaction in some consumers, and around one in 200 people are thought to be intolerant to soya, for example.

Less Risk

Around 48 million cases of foodborne illness are recorded annually in the United States – that’s around one in every six people who will be ill each year from the food they eat.
