Quorn reviews 30 years

The year 2015 marked Quorn Foods’ 30th birthday, with over 3 billion Quorn meals consumed to date. From our first Quorn Meatless and Soy Free Pie to over 100 variations available across the world today, here’s a run-through of some of the defining moments since it all began.

Although Quorn first hit the supermarket shelves in the UK in 1985, it all started with an idea in the 1960’s by Quorn’s founder Lord Rank. The initial thinking was to find a more sustainable source of protein to help to solve the global protein shortage, on the understanding that the level of global meat consumption was unsustainable.

Mycoprotein™ was developed and is the main ingredient of all Quorn products today, as it has a meat-like texture and is high in protein fibre. It’s a nutritious alternative to meat-based meals. The first Quorn Meat Free pie was sold in Sainsbury’s in 1985 after being created in Buckinghamshire, England. Quorn’s Meat Free Pieces started to appear in 1990, and are still one of the most popular Quorn products worldwide to this day.

The 1990’s saw the Quorn brand reach out globally, with the release of the Quorn Deli range and the introduction of Quorn Meat Free Burgers and Sausages. Quorn also began the sale of products across America. Wimpy began selling Quorn burgers in 1997 and they were added to the McDonald’s UK menu for a short time in 2004.

There are now over 100 Quorn products sold worldwide. With fresh concerns over livestock and climate change, Mycoprotein™ may well stand to serve its initial purpose, “to provide the world with a nutritious, abundant, environmentally friendly protein”.

There’s now also a Quorn gluten-free range and an array of Vegan products, which are further steps to Quorn developing healthier, tastier products for everyone to enjoy, regardless of their dietary requirements.
